“Steal this Thief of the Night”’

26 Jan

“Steal this Thief of the Night”

Doesn’t it feel wondrous to lie,

to cheat, to cast to steel?

The cold heart of conviction venison,

the voluptuousness of steel bars:

she is a raven,

fleeting in the scalding night,

fleeing a cast-iron frying pan

to destroy your face,

your fate tacky as the crackle of a panther running wild,

through streets of icicle shackles

and as it is some sort of purity,

both wondrous and genuine,

which doth plague and placate us?

Like the plaque of a spittoon?

Grizzly bear fangs?

This is the last time

I shall ever wear a wolf suit.

Leave my shadows alone.

“Rain of Blood”

21 Jan

“Rain of Blood”

Sleepless nights in sparrow shadows

they say it is commoner than common

to struggle through communes,

incommunicado, broken harps,

tobacco pouches, wide winsome,

this tooth are a dragon’s, this rain

and on some honeymoon limerick,

a pop song scorched

to the spine of your soul

in your most secret place

in glades by the wildfires

in dim drunk glasses by the lion furs

on fours to heels clicking

oppressive in your affluence

impressive in your condolence

your earnest for your today toys

you saved the one original tooth

with which you were born

an animal of glory, spiteful,

heels dug to skittering collapse

spurs for the dragons of skulls

and all the weak warmed over

a spit of sun on your cups

a dirty lineage to strangle laundry lines,

depth of this ruse, tussle with secrets

sunburned banquets,

sleep through meals,

see-through only’s.

“Trained for a Single Photograph”

19 Jan
“Trained for a Single Photograph”
It’s something to look forward to,
living and dying in a single photograph,
laughing and loving in the shuddering,
breathing and suffocating in your image,
somewhere this year has already passed,
the real three of us together again,
the repeated disasters,
a rash of infrequencies,
your daughter, deserted at the altar;
your son, a bride at the bridge;
your horse, folded forever in flowers;
it’s a suntan, it’s my lips, it’s feminine;
there’s only so many roads
confusion in the alleyway to wipe away,
we’re cats in a spiral,
wild-eyed, fangs dug in to the tilt,
this sort of bar is raised above your dress,
I’m a howling owl
in need of water for someone
somewhere but we already started.

“Years Ago”

17 Jan

“Years Ago”

It was years ago

and I remember stomping fish

at the bottom of a barrow

I remember afternoons

your pearl-sealed secrets

your auburn hair glowing downy rain

to eager lamps of platitudes

woodpeckers of fortune

who follow the fallow of an eve

the tallow of circumspection

to bright brakes, cleaned hornets

to follow your phantom

to shotgun alleys, cleaned corners

to the razor of fortune,

to the gizzard of coalesce,

witches, all of us:

the smell of burning hair

the pressing of fangs at your wrist,

it’s hard to see through electrical tape

on other planets, to other futures,

but we the robots deep inside, all of us.

“Back an’ Forth”

14 Jan

“Back an’ Forth”

You travel back and forth through time,

but you’re not a time traveler—

you’re just the saddest individual

whoever lived, and it is a competition—

it’s cutthroat where parrots left

it’s eventual snowflake tears,

perfect bodies

someone to know you too closely

a harmed sweater, heartwarming gloves

we’ll ride the toboggan together again

it will be our secret in the slippers

we’ve already tended the garden

until your braids grew tender

we’ve upended the refrigerator

cold breeze, another bender,

another big emotional spender

sway with me in the hammock,

I’ve lost your locks,

your hair and otherwise

and it’s unspeakable

to commit the key.

“Photographs for Royalty”

11 Jan
“Photographs for Royalty”
I awoke to the flowers of my vomit
and tells the splintered heart of old
we were rash to be photographs
but presence wrapped so secretly
the severity of moonlight moonshine
drop, skip, and a jump rope
but horrible omens did ever cease
train-drowned rivers the seat of disease
explore with us these daisies and your fire
the underwear of submarines
and laughing-glass smocks
we tied up the dirty dishes
lunged at panthers secretly
in bellies of storks
please pet the ragweed and cattails
this umbrella falls
and we’re swamp-innocent
the cottontails of rattlesnakes in the mail
your ivory broken branches,
onyx through a beautiful river
of infinite and this pain of honey.

“We’re Sorry”

7 Jan

“We’re Sorry”

For the balloons

for all the two-step Tuesdays

for raisins and the brain

for hairs in your milk

for striding diets and tides to rip you

we’re sorry for your bras and bandits

scampering, the shuddering moons

I’m sorry for daffodils

lipstick smiles fading in the soil

I’m sorry for all the gifts and sincerity

but worst of all the humility

crowns in the glue of envelopes

licked by the tongues of cat queens,

cat purses, cat desserts, cat loneliness

the aimless silkiness of cat purses,

tender buttons: it was all just a lark

and some lost hawk

circling in winsome degradation.

“Ghost Candy”

3 Jan

“Ghost Candy”

Through cellophane fingertips and all,

an artificial world beautiful

in the tip of a spyglass

the rip of an eyepatch

I’ll wait in the cold breath

abuse of a crystal choir

longing tongue and toes and all

recline slip of a lounge glass

and vests made of champagne

iron peckerwood, birds in flutes

and flu sung through kisses

smoke rings in palliative poem,

bird feather clothes,

rest of your heart

close your eyes for angels,

candy for the corner:

cravings for blind gloves.
